Working in Mexico:

Different cultures have different work etiquettes and nuances. When immersing in your co-op work term placement, it is important to adhere to the cultural expectations. The following information is from the Canadian Intercultures website.

  • Attire: Dress code is more formal for work. Women wear makeup and have their hair done to make a good impression.

  • Hierarchy: The owner of the business is usually the decision maker. Skipping over an immediate supervisor is seen as betrayal. Provide ideas only when formally asked.

  • Greetings: Supervisors should be addressed formally (usted) with their title followed by their last name

  • Conflicts: Confront work-related problems in a friendly manner or speak to a supervisor.

  • Punctuality: You should be on time, follow deadlines, and try not to be absent unless there are issues with family or friends.

Interesting Facts:

  • Mexico introduced chocolate, chillies, and corn

  • The volcano rabbit lives here

  • The National University of Mexico is the oldest university in North America

  • Some Mexicans speak Italian

  • Cinco de Mayo on May 5 honours the Mexican victory over the French army at Puebla de los Angeles in 1862. (Note: This holiday is not celebrated Mexico as much as it is here in Vancouver)

  • Mango, papaya, coconut and pineapples are common and favourite fruits

  • The region from Sonora to Tmaulipas holds hundreds of dinosaur fossils
