First Volunteering

First Volunteering
By: Tabatha Patterson
My first volunteering experience at SFU was as an Orientation Leader. I learned a lot of valuable information about the university and about leadership, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I can’t say the same for my first job… or my second, or third. And my volunteer experience has come in handy whenever I have applied to another paid or volunteer position at SFU, and elsewhere.
Those considering volunteering may want to reflect and ask themselves, what are they hoping to accomplish? For example, a summer job may add to your resume, but take time away from hobbies and interests. Volunteering might be the perfect solution to your dilemma. By finding strategic volunteer opportunities you will be able to get the experience you need within your interests. Volunteer experience could also provide you more flexibility to make the opportunity into whatever you want it to be. Supporting a cause you believe in, or performing duties that complement your interests probably won’t feel like work! Winston Churchill said it nicely: "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." You never know what kind of doors that the first volunteering experience will open for you if you are willing to follow your passions, interests and curiosities.
To find a volunteering opportunity that helps you explore, further develop skills and interests in alignment with who you are, check out the postings on Simplicity,GoVolunteer (try the advanced search), CharityVillage, and You can also book an appointmentwith the SFU Volunteer Services Advisor.
