The Work Study Program

Are you a student with financial need looking for the opportunity to participate in research-based projects on campus?  If so, we encourage you to consider SFU’s Work-Study Program. 

The Work-Study Program is an excellent opportunity to earn a supplemental income while gaining valuable experience connecting with various members of the SFU community.  Recognizing that a student’s first commitment is to his/her studies, Work-Study hours are flexible, on-campus and supervised.

Work-Study positions are available during the Fall, Spring and Summer terms, beginning with the first day of classes and ending at the end of the Final Exam period for each term.  The value of your Work-Study placement will vary depending on your assessed financial need.  Successful applicants will be awarded Work-Study hours for a term.

To apply for SFU's Work-Study program (and to maintain your eligibility to participate in the program), you:

  • must have a demonstrated financial need (as assessed by SFU's assessment process).
  • must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units of normally graded courses in the term of application.
  • must have a minimum CGPA of 2.00 at SFU in the term of application (waived for students in their first term at SFU).

How to apply

How do I find out if I am eligible?

Approximately three weeks before the start of the upcoming term, an email will be sent to your SFU email account informing you of your eligibility to participate in the Work-Study program.

If you are eligible, your email will contain a notification package informing you of your Work-Study award and how to apply for a Work-Study position.  This package will include an acess code to view all the Work-Study positions available for the term.

Please note, the Work-Study notification package will only confirm your eligibility to participate in the program and does not guarantee you will secure a Work-Study placement.

How do I find a Work-Study position?

All Work-Study positions available for the term are posted on our Work-Study Job Search System.  To view these postings, you will need to enter the access code included in your notification email.

If you are interested in a position, contact the Project Supervisor for an interview.  We recommend you bring your resume, references, a copy of your class schedule, and your Work-Study Placement Form (which was included in your Work-Study notification email/package).

Each term, eligible students are able to participate in ONE Work-Study project.  If you are offered more than one position, make a timely decision and inform the Project Supervisor(s).

What is the pay?

The hourly rate of pay is $10.25 per hour plus standard benefits.

Your Project Supervisor will have you complete the following forms:

  • SFU Personal Data Form
  • Federal Tax Credit Form (TD1)
  • BC Tax Credit Form (TD1BC)

These forms are required by SFU's Payroll department to enter you into the payroll system.

Once you have been entered by Payroll, you are paid biweekly for the actual number of hours you complete.  You must report your hours to your Project Supervisor (or designate) who will convey the information to Payroll.  If you do not complete the full number of Work-Study hours you have been awarded, you will not receive the full amount of your award.

Work-Study projects of particular interest to First Nations groups:

Project title:  Communication Strategy for Indigenous Student Services Centre

Purpose:  To provide current information brochures for indigenous students about financial aid resources, Metis and FN status, graduate studies, SFU Summit's Indigenous Academia and ISC services.

Duties include:  Research communication strategies of other Indigenous Student Centres. Outline a strategy incorporating the best practices of these strategies for possible use with information brochures.

Project title:  Enhancing Communication within SFU (ISC)

Purpose:  The project purpose is to continue building the FAQ data-base and the weekly distribution of Tuzz to our growing list-serve of Indigenous students.  Tuzz is the weekly newsletter that informs our student of scholarships, bursaries, job opportunities, and other events that are pertinent to Indigenous students.

Duties include:  To research quantitatively, and qualitatively, frequently asked questions (FAQ for Ask-SFU page) often asked by new and returning students, and to compile and update scholarships and bursaries available to First Nation, Inuit, and Métis students.  This will include funds for American Indians as an increasing number of students are from the USA.

Project title:  First-year First Nations Studies Curriculum (First Nations Studies)

Purpose:  This project will collect and examine available university level First Nations Studies/Aboriginal Studies curriculum; ultimately the supervisor of this project will use this research to evaluate existing resources.

Duties include:  Researches content materials including textual or audio or visual materials from libraries, websites, books, interviews, or other resource locations as directed. Identify materials and sources for research.

Project title:  The Virtual Village Project

Purpose:  To create a research and reference library of images of First Nations’ communities along the Northwest Coast from the 18th century to today through the use of early explorers’ drawings, sketches and paintings, photographs from the late 19th century onward, as well as archival documents.

Duties include:  Analysing and categorizing historical photographs, maps, sketches, paintings and other works that have been digitized by the Bill Reid Centre and are held in Centre’s database. Learn to identify and sort these works into the appropriate language classifications and villages.

Project title:  FNS Curriculum Fourth Year Development

Purpose:  Research for materials on First Nations Studies curriculum content and teaching.

This project will collect and examine available university level First Nations Studies/Aboriginal Studies curriculum. Research will be used to evaluate existing resources. This position is beneficial to those students interested in First Nations Studies research and curriculum development.

Duties:  Researches content materials including textual or audio or visual materials from libraries, websites, books, interviews, or other resource locations as directed. Identify materials for research. To also review and analyse for ranking materials researched. Sorts, collects, transcribes, compiles, converts collected or researched materials. Prepares presentations and prepares mock-ups and/or demos.

General Work-Study projects:

Project title:  South Pacific Shell Fish Analysis and Cataloguing (Archaeology)

Purpose:  Students will assist with the identification, analysis, and curation of shell fish collections excavated from archaeological sites in the United Kingdom of Tonga or the Republic of Fiji. Work duties will include organization of collections, sorting and identification of shellfish species, measurement and analysis of species assemblages, cataloguing and curation of collections as well as preliminary interpretation of the data. Work will be undertaken in the SFU South Pacific Archaeological laboratory.

Duties include:  organization of collections and sorting, species idenfication and analysis, and curation of collections.

Project title:  Sandpiper Mating system: the Ruff Project (Biology)

Purpose:  Examine factors maintaining unique and intriguing diversity in plumage colours and male mating behaviour in the RUff, a fancy sandpiper.  Males come in 3 genetically different types: territorial, non-territorial, and female mimics!  We study aspects of both male and female social and mating behaviour, genetics, and physiology.

Duties include:  Assist with setting up breeding experiments to determine female mate choice and genetics of male behaviour types, and make observations, and to ssist with incubation of of eggs and rearing of young, collection of feather and blood samples.

Project title:  Spoken Word Assistant -PSAs and Program (CJSF)

 Purpose:  Assist the Spoken Word Coordinator with preparing new public service announcements and preparing syndicated programming for air and general department duties.

Duties include:  Assist the Spoken Word Coordinator with preparing new public service announcements and preparing syndicated programming for air and general department duties. To edit spoken word programs, interviews and program segments to ready them for air

Project title:  Circumscribed Interests in Autism Spectrum Disorder (Psychology)

 Purpose:  The research question of this study is: how do CI’s in ASD relate to social outcomes and integration in adulthood? Specifically, this study aims to 1) Determine the positive and negative effects of CI’s in ASD and typically-developing groups, 2) If they are found to be interfering in social development and integration, to determine what can be done to use CIs to support social integration rather than hinder it.

Duties include:  Conducting a background literature review; searching for previous studies on circumscribed interests on PsychInfo and other relevant search engines, engaging with students through the study to obtain pilot data.

Project title:  Trends in Criminal Justice (Criminology)

Purpose:  This project explores trends and issues dealing with correct police practices, individual rights, law enforcement-related Supreme Court decisions, and community/police relations.

Duties include:  Locate relevant materials through library and Internet research, and the collection and organization of these materials.
