4 days, 2 campuses, and one BIG FAIR!

4 days, 2 campuses, and one BIG FAIR!
By: Mike Wong
On September, 17-20, SFU has seen one of its most successful career, graduate, and volunteer fairs to date! Sponsored by the Chartered Accountants of BC and CGA BC, our largest and well-known career fair, presented by Career Services and AISEC SFU, went without a hitch. It facilitated lots of engagement and interaction between 3000+ students and the over 120 organizations who participated! For those that attended, you already know how valuable and inspiring it was to attend and talk to all the representatives from these diverse organizations on both the Burnaby and Surrey campuses. For those that missed out, here is a recap of the event:
Career Fair:
While all the fairs were grouped under one roof, SFU had many participants from many industries. Those that were interested in marketing found Pepsi Co, and those that wanted to work for the government, the Public Services Commission was here, to name a few. For those that were interested in finding careers, most of these employers were hiring soon-to-be graduating students. However, there were some employers on-site that were hiring interns or co-op students, such as Clearly Contacts, a quickly-rising and upcoming online optical store. You could also apply to ICBC, who were hiring at the fair.
Graduate Fair:
For a lot of students, furthering their education is an option to consider after his/her undergraduate degree. That is why numerous universities and institutions were on hand to offer information about the various graduate programs. The University of Oregon was even here to inform students about their Masters Degree in Business Administration. Interested in trades or practical experience? BCIT was also here to promote their Media and Creative Communications program. Graduate schools are a whole new world which definitely attracts a lot of students who are interested in the pursuit of knowledge. Not only were there local institutions, there were international programs as well, such as universities from Scotland!
Volunteer and Community Engagement Fair:
Of course, one cannot forget the volunteer fair, where several not-for-profit organizations were here to promote awareness and inform the public of the various volunteer opportunities to be had. One notable organization was the BC Canadian Cancer Society, where they had numerous opportunities for the students to be engaged and give back to the community. For instance, they were looking for volunteers to help organize and plan their charity walks. Volunteering and giving back to the community is an invaluable experience that helps oneself learn more about him/herself, and definitely shows the world that you are a well-rounded, civic citizen.
Well there you have it! SFU’s Big Fair in a nutshell. While there were numerous organizations here at the career fair, one cannot forget the message that was intended for everyone: there are many opportunities and possibilities out there for the student to explore. Students looking for careers were able to find out information about the specific industry they were interested in, while students who wanted to give back and gain the social currency, found out more about their interested not-for-profit organization!
