Ricepaper is a Canadian literary magazine that is mainly focused on promoting Asian Canadian culture, literature and arts. Founded in 1994, Ricepaper strives to reflect the diverse interests and lifestyles of Asian Canadians by embracing different voices from the local, national and global community. The magazine provides readers with various types of editorial content, including poetry, fiction, drama, graphic novels, reviews, etc.

Volunteering with Ricepaper means you get a chance to immerse yourself in a professional publishing environment, while at the same time getting to know cultures that are different from your background. Ricepaper is constantly looking for submissions of literary pieces that reflect Asian cultures and contain themes pertinent to the Asian Canadian demographic. Fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, and drama should be no more than 6000 words, whereas poetry can contain up to 7 poems in one submission. The good thing about being published in Ricepaper is that you get paid once the article has been reviewed by editors and selected for publication. The working hours for a freelancer are thus very flexible.

Apart from being a writer, you can also choose to work with the magazine. Ricepaper is currently seeking a videographer intern to help them with projects and interviews. As a videographer intern, you will get a chance to attend various events and dinners such as launch parties and artist interviews. Check out Sabrina's article on this opportunity! It would be really exciting to connect with people from the publishing industry and experience the Asian Canadian culture. The main responsibility of this intern is to shoot and edit videos, as well as come up with magazine video strategies. You have to commit 8 hours per month to this position. Although it is not paid, there is a possibility to have an honorarium based on funding. So for anyone who wants to expand their network and build up their skills, this position would be a good starting point.
