 The 2013 Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair was one third of The BIG Fair, which also included Career and Professional School components. This year, the annual event was held over a period of three days, with one at the Surrey campus and two at the Burnaby campus. It included approximately fifty volunteer organizations which came out to recruit student volunteers and spread the message of their cause.

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

We consider dedication, openness, and enthusiasm as the most important qualities.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

Once a week for at least 6 months.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Be flexible if you can and try a variety of things.

Semiahmoo House Society

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

We want our volunteers to be open of their feelings, aware of others, and have a bit knowledge of what we do.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

We require a minimum of 3 months. But we understand student volunteers are busy, and we would like to work around their availability.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Be open of your feelings and let yourself be vulnerable. This way, you allow others to understand you and yourself to know better about others.

Canadian Cancer Society

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

We believe everyone have a different skill set and we welcome the diversity of our volunteers.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

We are very flexible in terms of commitment with a range of 3-hour event to 2-year commitment. Volunteers receive an email from us every two weeks, and they can register for opportunities based on their availability.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

We would advise you to understand what interests you most, whether to build your resume, to expand your network, or to be involved in what you are passionate about, and then look for opportunities.

Surrey Crime Prevention Society

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

Volunteers need to be as least a minimum of 16-year-old and have passion in enhancing community safety.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

We are looking for volunteers that can commit a minimum of 6 months with a 1 - 2 hours shift every two weeks.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

We advise that everyone should volunteer regardless of what program you are in and what interests you have. Volunteering is a great way to get real-life experience and get connected.
