Opportunity Spotlight: TD Community Engagement Centre

Opportunity Spotlight: TD Community Engagement Centre
By: Lindsay Stroud
The TD Community Engagement Centre, located at SFU’s Surrey campus, is partnering up with the Delta School District to offer a group-mentoring program for newcomer students throughout Delta high schools from grades 8 to 12. The program will have a specific focus on students who have just arrived in Canada. As it can be a bit of an adjustment having just arrived into a new country, as well as the language challenges which they may face, Delta School District is currently looking for two volunteers to jump on board in becoming a mentor for these youth. Ideally, candidates will be 3rd to 4th year students (or even SFU Alumni) who are well integrated within Canada and have completed some form of a training program ( i.e. Peer Education, Peer Mentor etc.), one In which there is a ‘students helping students” approach to learning. The program will begin on Wednesday March 5th and go until June 18th with the program running once every two weeks after school from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at North Delta Secondary School. Time commitment is a minimum of at least 3 sessions, so 2 hours every 2 weeks for 6 weeks, however if you would like to do more than 6 weeks, that option is also available!
For more information on the program or to become a youth mentor, please contact SFU Surrey program coordinator Rachel Nelson at 778-782-8082 or re1@sfu.ca. All students are required to meet with the program coordinator before being confirmed as a volunteer.
You can also check out this PDF file if you would like a more in-depth description of the program!
