SFU's First-Year-Experience Program: Something All First Years Should Join!

SFU's First-Year-Experience Program: Something All First Years Should Join!
By: Anju Chhokar
Do you know a new SFU arts student set to begin their university career this fall, or are you yourself entering SFU as a first year arts student? If so, then SFU's First Year Experience is for you! The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences First Year Experience helps newly admitted students in the faculty adjust to university life, how to balance academics and social, volunteer and career work while making new friends and finding out about all of SFUs resources. Students will meet weekly with a mentor who is an experienced student and other first year students in the same program as them to make connections and have a support system that helps them. This program is based at the award-winning Surrey campus, and offers four programs;
- Explorations - interdisciplinary program designed specifically for students wishing to explore the diversity of the Arts and Social Sciences
- Crim One – for students specializing in Criminology
- Global Issues First-Year Learning Commuinty FLC - combining world literature, international studies and history.
- Social and Behavioural Sciences FLC - combining psychology, sociology and cognitive science.
In addition to these four programs, there are also special first-year programs for students in other faculties, including:
- Systems One – program that combines Mechatronics and Software Systems courses for students in Applied Sciences
- BusOne- for students entering the Beedie School of Business and consists of weekly workshops regarding academic, personal and social growth
- Interact Arts and Technology One – design 2D and 3D, program interactive systems, design and build games, and create prototypes.
- Science Year One - heading into the faculties of Science or Health Sciences? Then consider Science Year One — you'll find smaller class sizes and a unique first-year environment at our Surrey campus.
There is still time to change and enter one of the First-Year Experience programs! Visit https://www.sfu.ca/students/admission-requirements/applied/change-program.html and follow the links for the application to change programs. There are many benefits to the FYE program, as not only do you make friends easily and adjust from high school smoothly through smaller class sizes and a support system, but you also receive priority enrolment for courses in your program at SFU Surrey!
