Adverting is all around us. Depending on who you ask, we are bombarded by anywhere from hundreds to thousands of ads every day. Slogans are short words or phrases that are formulated to be meaningful and memorable. As a sharp student, I try not to be a passive consumer of information but often find myself rejecting the preferred reading of slogans and interpreting my own. Next time you come across these slogans, use them as powerful prompts to kick-start your career.

Nike, Inc. – JUST DO IT™

Nike really hit a home run with this slogan created in 1988. Simple and to the point, these three short words, accompanied by the Nike Swoosh, have fully infiltrated our consciousness. The message here is one I always find relevant – don’t procrastinate! This is usefully advice for those terms papers, but even more useful advice for kick-starting your career. There are compelling arguments for Volunteering or doing a Co-op, either way, start now!

McDonalds – I’m lovin’ it™

When Justin Timberlake signs on to sing your jingle, you are a force to be reckoned with. While it’s important to strive for excellence in both the academic and career world, it is also important to love what you do. Whether it is finding your major or narrowing down your career, remaining passionate can be essential. If you do not find a way to remain interested in the task at hand, it will negatively impact the end results. Ba da ba ba ba, explore!

Energizer® – Keeps going and going and going…

Do you remember that little pink bunny with the drum that keeps going and going and going? As busy students wading through papers and assignments, this tag line rings true. While there is a collective sigh of relief at the end of a semester, it is important to remember that professional development does not just start at graduation, nor does it take a break after a semester. Keep up the career journey while vacationing, filling a summer break or by making your spare time more productive. Keep looking and looking and looking for ways to improve.

Wendy’s® - Where’s the beef?

Premiering in 1984, this fast-food slogan was the pre-internet version of viral. Originally the phrase was uttered by an elderly lady in a Wendy’s commercial complaining about the disproportionate ratio of burger to bun. The last thing you want is to have a potential employer say this phrase when looking at your resume. In this fast-food world, everything seems to move at lightening speed, things need to get done – that paper written last minute, that cover letter done in a crunch. But whatever you are doing, you want it to reflect well on you and your capabilities. When it comes to the job market, make sure you are offering more than just filler. Maybe this means beefing up your resume with applicable work experience, taking courses that give you real skills, or just working on your online brand.

PlayStation® – Live in Your World, Play in Ours

Let’s face it, as the #selfie generation, we can all be a little narcissistic at times. As a student, it’s easy to get wrapped up in our world – papers, maybe a retail job, more papers, some coffee, and then a final. Take this short-lived PlayStation® 2 slogan as hope for the future. While the current academic struggle is real, and can sometimes be overwhelming, it is important to be planning for the future. Live in this world – study, volunteer, work. This helps to give you a firm foundation and understanding and to play in the world post-graduation.
