Your Involvement Matters

Your Involvement Matters
By: Taisia Lapko
Many students are involved “behind the counter” at Health & Counselling, whether working as co-op students or leading student groups and initiatives. This is who - and HOW - you can get involved with Health & Counselling as a student:
1 - Health Peers
Health Peers work directly with the Health Promotion team to support student well-being. Health Peers are trained for health education and outreach on various topics like body image, responsible partying, and sexual health. They also run free, ongoing events like fitness classes, cooking workshops, and Wellness Wednesdays.

Many of our Health Peers go on to get involved with the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC). SHAC members contribute to the Healthy Campus Community initiative through student engagement, advocacy, and feedback.
2 - Hi-FIVE
Hi-FIVE is a student-led group that promotes positive mental health and stigma-reduction across campus. You can find Hi-FIVE at many major events, talking about ways we can help reduce stigma - on campus and beyond it.

3 - Co-op students
SFU Co-operative Education provides lots of opportunities for students to get real-world experience in various industries. Health & Counselling is not an exception - we welcome multiple co-op students each semester in the areas of health promotion, research, and marketing & communications.
Keep watch for our student job postings. Learn more about co-op here >
4 - Creative Collective
In partnership with Student Engagement & Retention, Creative Collective’s events provide many opportunities for volunteers and participants to connect, relax, and unwind over crafts, motion, music and more. We’ve crafted paper pumpkins and tree ornaments, and even dabbled with musical instruments. If you’d like to get involved and facilitate an activity, we welcome the entire campus community to lead an activity.

5 - Events & Outreach Volunteers
World Mental Health Day, Dog Therapy, and more - Health & Counselling runs several events and regularly recruits student volunteers as part of the Student Ambassador Program.

Taisia is a fifth-year Communications & Publishing student on a co-op term with Health & Counselling. A proud Belarusian, you can find her blowing off steam in a kickboxing or hot yoga class, stuffing herself with pirozhky in between.
