Dr. Jeff Toward, Director

The Director is responsible for carrying out the administrative requirements of SFU Policy R20.01 and the Tri-Council Policy Statement 2: Ethics Conduct in Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2). The position is responsible for ensuring that ethics processes and polices at the University meet local, provincial, national and international requirements.

Dr. Dina Shafey, Associate Director  

The Associate Director works in collaboration with the Director to provide leadership with respect to ethics review processes, including identification of areas of vulnerability and for directing and overseeing changes in process and guidelines in order to ensure on-going compliance with national and international research ethics standards and requirements. The Associate Director develops and delivers education programs concerning research ethics to faculty, staff and students across all SFU campuses to ensure that the concepts and requirements of ethical conduct in research are communicated to faculty members, staff, and students.

Sarah Bennett, Manager

Manages the ethics review process and serves as a principal point of guidance and consultation to faculty members, staff and students on the interpretation and implementation of human research policy and provides advice and training to researchers with respect to the ethics application and review process. Conducts initial reviews of applications for completeness and compliance of SFU REB 20.01 and TCPS2 policies.

Alanna Dyck, Ethics Officer

Advises researchers on Canadian federal and provincial regulatory requirements and the TCPS2 requirements for conducting human research as well as specific UBC REB policies, standards and requirements. Advises researchers regarding how to complete the application form on the on-line system. Conducts initial reviews of applications for completeness and compliance to institutional, national, and international policies. Responds to inquiries with respect to ethics applications.
