Natural Sciences and Engineering Funding

The following announcements relate to research in the Natural Sciences and Engineering.

SFU's Research Funding Application Signature Sheet ("SFU Signature Sheet") is required prior to all research applications. This completed/fully signed (i.e.; Applicant, Chair and Dean) sheet must accompany an electronic copy of the application (no CVs) for ORS records at the time of application.

Email these documents to ors@sfu.ca.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP GRANTS for projects—Letter of Intent

The deadline for the Letter of Intent (LOI) for this competition is 1 FEB 2017.

The applicant is to submit their LOI themselves via NSERC's online system. No SFU Signature Sheet is necessary at this stage. Please note that once an applicant submits their LOI, it will be sent directly to NSERC. The LOI does not come to ORS for review. Therefore, please ensure your LOI is complete before pressing 'submit,' as you will not be able to get it back once submitted.

After submitting their LOI, NSERC will invite selected applicants to submit a full application. Please note that the SFU ORS internal deadline for the full application is 31 MAY 2017. The external NSERC deadline is 7 JUN 2017. For more details, see "Strategic Partnership Grants for Projects — Full Application" below.

The goal of NSERC’s Strategic Partnership Grants is to increase research and training in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years. Research and training under these grants must be conducted through a partnership between academic researchers and industry or government organizations. The competition budget is expected to be approximately $15 million for Year 1 of the projects, which could fund about 16 to 20 new awards in each target area.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH AND TRAINING EXPERIENCE (CREATE) PROGRAM—INTERNAL EXPRESSION OF INTEREST AND NSERC LETTER OF INTENT

AVPR Internal Deadline: Expression of Interest due 6 MAR 2017

ORS Internal Deadline: SFU SIG Sheet & copy of LOI due 24 APR 2017

Agency Deadline: 1 MAY 2017

The Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program supports the training of teams of highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad through the development of innovative training programs that encourage collaborative and integrative approaches, address significant scientific challenges associated with Canada’s research priorities, and facilitate the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce.

This year, NSERC has set a quota of six applications per institution for their Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program. Researchers planning to submit an LOI must submit an expression of interest, including the title of their proposal, a short abstract, the list of SFU researchers involved, and a list of partner institutions and organizations to sfuavpr@sfu.ca by 6 MAR 2017. The decision on the submitted expressions of interest will be communicated to the PIs by 13 MAR 2017.

Find more information about the internal selection process here.

Selected applicants will ultimately submit their LOI themselves via NSERC's online system. Please note that once an applicant submits their LOI, it will be sent directly to NSERC. The LOI does not come to ORS for review. Therefore, please ensure your LOI is complete before pressing 'submit,' as you will not be able to get it back once submitted.

NSERC will invite researchers to submit a full application on the basis of their LOI. Please note that the SFU ORS internal deadline for the full application is 15 SEP 2017. The external NSERC deadline is 22 SEP 2017. For more details, see "Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program—Full Application" below.

Notes on the Application Process

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

THE "SFU SIGNATURE SHEET"

At the time of application, all applications must be approved by ORS using an SFU Research Funding Application Signature Sheet (“SFU SIG Sheet”) prior to their submission. Applicants are strongly advised to allow sufficient lead time for the proper consideration of the application at each level.

SFU Signature Sheets are required from all SFU co‐applicants (“co‐PIs”) from different faculties/departments/schools than the home department/school of the SFU applicant. These additional SFU SIG Sheets normally accompany the SFU applicant’s SIG Sheet. Applications that have SFU co-applicants ("co-PIs"), applying from the same department on the same proposal, must sign the SFU Signature Sheet as well; all documents are emailed to ors@sfu.ca.

SFU Adjunct Professors must contact ors@sfu.ca or the appropriate Research Grants team member in advance of the internal SFU deadline about their plan to apply for a grant.

TRI-AGENCY DEADLINES + THE E-SUBMISSION PROCESS

All Tri‐Agency deadlines require the University (i.e. ORS) to complete the eSUB of all on‐line applications in advance of 5 pm Pacific Time (“PT”).

The on‐line application process requires the applicant to choose “submit” on the on‐line application in order for their Research Grants team member to review the application with regards to compliance with SFU’s Research policies and funding agency requirements. Problematic applications are “electronically returned” (when time permits) to the applicant for revision. Revised applications are “submitted” (again, by the applicant) for ORS’ final review prior to the final esubmission by ORS on behalf of the University to the funding agency. The funding agency sends an automatic reply to the applicant, confirming their receipt of the on‐line application.

SFU's eligibility requirements for applicants and co-applicants, please contact ors@sfu.ca or the appropriate Research Grants team member.
