Guidelines & Policies
Researchers must follow a wide range of university and external guidelines in carrying out their work. SFU Research Policies cover Grants and Contract, Research Review Committees, Intellectual Property, Research Institutes, and Research Personnel.
The Canadian TriCouncils, NSERC, CIHR, and SSHRC, publish Financial Eligibity Guidelines covering the acceptable uses of grant funds. Detailed information is also provided in a comprehensive Power Point Presentation.
Those who work with animal or human subjects and those whose research involves biological, chemical, and radiological safety must apply for certificates indicating approval by the appropriate review committee. All research conducted under the auspices of SFU is subject to the guidelines for responsible conduct of research.
ORS has its own policies with respect to record keeping.
Please note that all applications/proposals/letters of intent must be approved by Research Services using an SFU Research Funding Application Signature Sheet prior to their submission.
ORS will approve applications only for eligible applicants.
The University has established overhead (or indirect cost) rates to be used in budgeting for research projects.
When undertaking field research, there are many insurance issues to be considered. SFU Policy GP 17, covers the area of personal safety and risk mitigation for faculty, staff and students participating in University-related research and teaching in off-campus, often remote, locations.
Researchers often wish to share funding with co-investigators at other instituitions. The specific procedures for transferring funding depend on whether an SFU researcher is the recipient or the sender of research funding.
