This creative writing course will help students develop the skills necessary for writing plays. Through the assigned text, selected readings, and class lectures/workshops, we will focus on how to create characters, write effective monologues and dialogue, how to structure a scene, the meaning of conflict and high stakes, what it means to create a specific world for the audience – through realism and magic realism, and the role of tone and voice in drama. We will also examine the writing process in general. By the end of the course, students will be comfortable writing a full-length play and will learn how to critically assess, edit and read from their own work.
