Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

This workshop examines the growing role that video is playing in a variety of public relations, industrial, advocacy and educational contexts. The emphasis of this course is on issues of communication design in relation to the goals and values in specific communication forums.

COURSE DETAILS:

Communicating health and risk information to an audience is a challenging and subtle task, and requires an understanding of risk assessment, perception, and communication. Designing communication media that can influence an audiences’ perception or behaviour in relation to specific health or environmental risks, requires an understanding of the context, culture, and determinants of both the audience and the messaging.  This course provides an overview of risk communication and perception as a background to designing mediated health and environmental risk communication media targeted at specific audiences.

Students will be expected to design and produce health or environmental risk communication on chosen topics, with the final production being video documentaries.  This course is designed with both labs to develop skills and techniques for producing risk communication media, and with seminars to acquire an understanding of the theories and practices involved in risk communication in our society today.

Students will be required to engage in the current issues and debates in risk communication by giving presentations, participating in discussions, and in writing assignments. Students will also have to demonstrate, by the end of the course, an application of their theoretical understanding by producing video documentaries that communicate issues regarding environmental and health risks to a specific audience.

Enrollment is limited.  Experience with media production is recommended. 

A minimum CGPA of 2.25, and approval as a communication student is required for entry into most communication upper division courses.

The school expects that the grades awarded in this course will bear some reasonable relation to established university-wide practices with respect to both levels and distribution of grades.
