Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Continues and expands upon the work undertaken in Acting I. Students with credit for FPA 251 may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

A continuation of the exploration of acting as action and an exercise of engaged physical presence. Initial work will review the sources - physical and otherwise - of presence and intention, and the components of vital, organic and coherent performed action and speech. This will be followed by studies in the combination of speech and action in solo and then duo situations. Working with material from conventional plays and/or other written sources, students will explore ways of creating an active and personal relationship with performed action and text. Two main projects will involve scenes from 20th C. theatre texts, with one of these leading to a final presentation. For all assignments, work and preparation outside of class is required.

Grading

  • Assignments and scene work, some to be completed outside class hours 40%
  • Participation in discussion, critique and analysis of in-class work 15%
  • Punctuality, attitude, and support of the ensemble 15%
  • Growth and progress 10%
  • Final presentation 20%

NOTES:

EXPECTATIONS

- Students should be present and ready to work at the class start time. Absences or lateness will be reflected in grade, with each unjustified absence affecting your overall grade. Justified absences are those for illness or family emergency. Please notify me of absence in advance via email. Last minute notification can made via text message.

- Appropriate clothing is essential for all class work: wear clothing that allows you to move without restriction, without dragging underfoot. Excessive jewelry or make-up should be avoided.

- Respect and abide by studio rules: no food or drink in the work room and no footwear other than character shoes.

- Work on assignments outside of class time is a regular requirement. I am available to work on material outside of class time providing we can find a mutually suitable time.

- Any written assignments will be graded on both content and quality of the writing. Late assignments will be docked 5% for each day overdue.

- You are welcome to discuss your progress with me at any time during the semester, preferably by appointment. For urgent concerns, you can also seek me out after class.

Registrar Notes:

SFU’s Academic Integrity web site http://students.sfu.ca/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating.  Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the University community.  Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the University. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the University. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
