CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

For students contemplating becoming teachers of Immersion, Core French at the secondary level, or for intermediate and middle school generalists who want to have an introductory overview of second language teaching in general and French education in British Columbia specifically. The general objective is to help prospective French teachers to better understand Canadian bilingualism, its historical, sociopolitical and cultural context, as well as gain a basic understanding of French education programs in British Columbia. The language of instruction will be French, but the class will be "English-friendly".

COURSE DETAILS:

This course is for students contemplating becoming teachers in the French programs in British Columbia (Core French, intensive French, French immersion or Francophone programme). The aim of this course is to encourage analysis and reflection about the multi-dimensional nature of teaching French in school in minority context in Canada. The general objective of the course is to help prospective French teachers to better understand Canadian bilingualism, its historical, socio-political and cultural context, to acquire knowledge about principles of second language pedagogy as well as to gain basic understanding of French programs’ objectives and contents. More specifically, we will seek to identify elements specific to teaching (in) French in B.C by comparing with models develop here and elsewhere in the world. This course will also provide opportunities to establish theoretical and pedagogical reference points in order to locate current trends in teaching languages. Students will also explore ways to show elementary and high schools students that they can live in French in B.C. by participating in cultural activities and by reflecting on their own linguistic and professional journey by developing a portfolio and interview with a bilingual or plurilingual individual. The language of instruction will be French, but the class is “English-friendly”.

A detailed course outline will be handed out to students on the first day of the course.

Ce cours s’adresse aux étudiants intéressés à enseigner dans les programmes de français en Colombie- Britannique (français de base, immersion en français, programme francophone). Le cours vise à susciter l’analyse et la réflexion sur les dimensions multiples qui caractérisent l’enseignement du/en français dans les écoles en contexte minoritaire canadien. Plus particulièrement, nous chercherons à identifier les éléments spécifiques de l’enseignement du/en français en Colombie-Britannique, en comparant certains modèles d’aménagement de l’éducation développés ici et ailleurs. Le cours sera aussi l’occasion de poser quelques repères théoriques et didactiques, afin de situer les tendances actuelles de la pratique éducative de l’enseignement des langues (intégration des apprentissages, approche expérientielle, portfolio, etc.). Les étudiants seront également amenés à explorer des façons de montrer aux élèves qu’on peut vivre en français en Colombie-Britannique en participant à des activités culturelles et à réfléchir sur leur propre parcours langagier/professionnel à travers l’élaboration d’un portfolio et d’une entrevue avec une personne bi/plurilingue.

Un syllabus détaillé des semaines sera remis au premier cours.
