COURSE DETAILS:

In Designing Creative Ventures, students have the opportunity to work in teams to conceptualize a small shop creative venture. Creative entrepreneurship is the practice of setting up a business — or setting oneself up as self-employed — in one of the creative industries. Our goal is to provide artists, communicators, writers, and designers of all sorts (graphic, games, interaction) a space to explore the potential for starting a creative venture upon graduation. Students will begin by exploring creative entrepreneurship by interviewing an entrepreneur in an area of interest. Then, using lean startup methodology, students will work on conceptualizing their own creative venture through two phases. In the first phase, you will articulate a hypothesis about the market for your creative work and test it by interviewing potential customers. In the second stage, you will create a minimal viable product and test it with the market. Techniques covered include the business model canvas, the opportunity matrix, the minimal viable product, the pivot, and the breakeven analysis. You will end the course with the chance to pitch your idea to a panel of outside reviewers from the creative industries.

SFU’s Academic Integrity web site http://students.sfu.ca/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating.  Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the University community.  Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the University. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the University. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
