CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to landforms, climates, soils and vegetation; their origins, distributions, interrelationships and roles in the ecosystem. Laboratory work and field trips are included. Breadth-Science.

COURSE DETAILS:

Geography 111 is designed to introduce students to four spheres of Earth: the lithosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere.  Attention will be given to processes at work within earth and on earth’s surface.  Students will study landforms, rocks, soils, water, vegetation, and consider origins, distributions, inter-relations, and roles of such in ecosystems.  Also, students will learn about energy budgets, climate, weather, rivers, glaciers, coasts, deserts, and more.  Lab assignments will reinforce concepts covered in lectures and will help develop technical skills in geography such as map and landscape interpretation, topographic profile construction, graph preparation and analysis, and pH testing. In addition, students will work collaboratively to learn about dynamic processes resulting in such events as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, fires, floods, and landslides.
