Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An analysis of the definition and control of youthful misconduct in an historical and contemporary context. Attention is focused upon: the social construction of 'juvenile delinquency', the decline of the concept, and the emergence of the concept of the 'young offender'; the Young Offenders Act and related legislation; the growth of the welfare state and the role of social workers in 'policing' youth and families; explanations for the criminal behavior of young persons; state and private sector programs designed to deal with such behavior.

COURSE DETAILS:

The course will begin with an examination of the existing systems for the surveillance, management and discipline of youth, and the associated legislation (notably, the Youth Criminal Justice Act).  This will be followed by a review of the evolution of these systems and the various explanations for their emergence.  The main theories of 'delinquency' will then be analyzed critically, in conjunction with a review of the programmes and services established to deal with young offenders.  The course will provide both an introduction to and a compact overview of, the response to the 'social problem' of youth crime.

The assignment drop-off box is emptied Monday to Friday at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. only and the contents are date stamped accordingly. No other department’s date stamp will apply (e.g. Library/Campus Security) and the School of Criminology is not responsible for assignments submitted any other way (e.g. slid under office doors). The University does NOT accept assignments by fax. 
  • A student must complete ALL aspects of a course (including assignments, exams, class participation, presentations, chat room components of Distance Education courses and other), otherwise he/she will receive a grade of N. 
  • E-mail policy for on campus courses only: The School of Criminology STRONGLY DISCOURAGES the use of e-mail in lieu of office hour visits. Criminology advises its instructional staff that they are NOT required to respond to student e-mails and that students wishing to confer with them should do so in person during scheduled meeting times.
