Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to digital photography that is open to beginners in which students will learn comprehensive skills in camera work, studio lighting and image post-processing. The focus of the course is on developing a final portfolio that demonstrates a wide range of technical, aesthetic, stylistic, genre and conceptual approaches to digital photography. Students are encouraged to experiment and develop their own eye and approaches, while learning the fundamentals of digital image production and workflows, including output for web and print.

COURSE DETAILS:

An introduction to digital photography and photographic image modification through the use of computer technology. Students will build skills and techniques in digital photography and image processing for digital printing, the web and interactive multimedia. Emphasis is placed on acquiring digital photographic skills based on proficiency through the appropriate use of software and image editing tools. In addition, students will develop an understanding of aesthetic concepts relevant to digital photography, and will develop their own creative approach to digital imagery.

Course Objectives

In this course students will:

- Build on the fundamentals of traditional photographic concepts and techniques

- Utilize lighting kits, digital cameras, scanners and other devices as integral tools for production

- Apply foundational and intermediate digital photography and editing skills to their creative practice

- Explore various output options

- Gain historical and cultural perspectives on their own artistic practice

- Define their own “eye” and artistic vision

Grading

  • Regular Exercises, Projects and Presentations 50%
  • Final Digital Photography Portfolio of 20 images 30%
  • Final Exam 20%

NOTES:

All work is individual.

REQUIREMENTS:

No previous experience with digital photography is presumed, while those more experience will benefit from being challenged in their creative art and design skills.

Materials

MATERIALS + SUPPLIES:

All readings are online. You wil use your SFU Library portal access to Lynda.com for various online tutorials. Students will be able to access SFU/SIAT photography equipment at the SFU Surrey Campus Library.
