Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Develops skills in writing in linguistics while providing a closer look at fundamental concepts of the discipline. As topics examined may vary by term, this course may be repeated once for credit if the topic is different. Writing/Quantitative.

COURSE DETAILS:

We will explore the foundations of constructing robust linguistic arguments in the major components of linguistic analysis, Phonology, Morphology, and Syntax. Through the close reading of research articles, students will understand how the logical steps in an explanation are constructed, and discover how to compose in writing the explanation of a linguistic pattern. They will also emulate these techniques in their own solutions of linguistic puzzles.

  • In-Class writing assignments 20%
  • Summaries 20%
  • Midterms (2) 60%
  • No Final Exam

No textbook; articles provided on Canvas. Students may need to refer to a standard textbook introduction to Linguistics.
