CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Students will explore leadership within education institutions, including both formal and informal leadership experiences. Students will explore perceptions of leadership with the goal of growing their leadership skills and capacity. Students will explore leadership theories and research with the goal of placing their own understanding of leadership within current paradigms. Students who have taken EDUC 392 ST-Leadership & EDUC may not take EDUC 376 for further credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course offers students the opportunity to explore leadership within education institutions, including both formal and informal leadership opportunities and experiences. Students will explore personal and cultural perceptions of leadership with the goal of growing their own leadership skills and capacity. Students will also explore and interrogate leadership theories and research with the goal of placing their own understanding of leadership within current paradigms.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

Students will be introduced to a broad survey of leadership theory and will explore their lived experiences with leadership, as leaders and as community members. Students are expected to demonstrate:

  • basic understanding of the theories presented in class;
  • ability to identify, critique, and interrogate leadership experiences as presented in leadership case studies;
  • willingness to engage in formal and informal leadership opportunities in class;
  • interest and demonstrated ability in working independently;
  • interest and demonstrated ability in contributing to the work of both large and small groups.

  • Leadership Profile 30%
  • Grade Application and Personal Reflection 20%
  • Final Project: Individual Leadership Case 30%

NOTES:

  • There will be no class JUNE 20, 2019
  • Engagement in class discussions is expected; in-class activities are dependent on your active participation
  • If you are required to miss part of a class meeting, it is important that you contact me before the class you miss.
