CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Introduction to key concepts necessary for understanding the character and organization of work in contemporary society. The discussion of such issues as how our society decides who works, what the work will be, and under what conditions people work, will be situated in the context of current debates, trends and issues. Breadth-Social Sciences.

COURSE DETAILS:

Introduction to key concepts necessary for understanding the character and organization of work in contemporary society. The discussion of such issues as how our society decides who works, what the work will be, and under what conditions people work, will be situated in the context of current debates, trends and issues. The course will examine how the Canadian economy and labour market have been shaped by ongoing colonialism, and the implications for Indigenous and non-Indigenous workers and livelihoods.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand basic structure of work under capitalism.
  2. Understand how wage labour has evolved and how it is organized in Canada today.
  3. Analyze the relationship between capitalism and colonialism as an ongoing process.
  4. Understand how labour movements have developed and the role of unions in Canada today.
  5. Critically assess concepts like inequality and precarity, and apply them to understanding working peoples’ experiences of the economy.

Grading

  • Tutorial attendance and participation 15%
  • Written assignments x 2 25%
  • Midterm exam 25%
  • Final exam (invigilated, open book) 35%

NOTES:

Grading: The letter grade N (incomplete) is given when a student has enrolled for a course, but did not write the final examination or otherwise failed to complete the coursework, and did not withdraw from the course before the deadline date. An N is considered and F for purposes of scholastic standing. 

Grading System: Undergraduate Course Grading System is A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D, F, N (N standing to indicate the student did not complete).

A+ 95-100 B+ 80-84 C+ 65-69 D 50-54
A 90-94 B 75-79 C 60-64 F 0-49
A- 85-89 B- 70-74 C- 55-59

This course will utilize a variety of readings and films. Readings will be available online and through the library reserve system, and a full list will be provided in the full syllabus and on Canvas.
