Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Presents drawing practices as they relate to practical, conceptual, aesthetic and historical issues in contemporary art. Additional assignments will be required for students taking the course at this level. Students with credit for FPA 362 may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course concentrates on drawing as a practice fundamental and essential to all forms of visual expression. Any considerate investigation of drawing must involve a degree of conventional studio practice and the value of description and resemblance to a full understanding of a drawing’s purpose. At the same time, the curriculum maintains an emphasis upon drawing as a process of total observation involving eyes, ears, physical gestures and actions in response to materials and environment. Assigned studio work and projects will vary in duration and complexity and scale but always will carry an undertone of exploration in progress. There will be a block of studio time devoted to concentrated study from life to develop an appreciation for the traditional and useful skills and understanding how those skills apply to an expanded understanding of visual communication.

Grading

  • Attendance and Participation 15%
  • Folio and Studio Work 45%
  • Projects 40%

NOTES:

Each student is expected to keep planning sketches and field sketches to be edited and assembled into a folio along with in-class studies for submission near the end of term. A final grade is based on observable progress and class participation, completed assignments and a final folio submission.

As always, most homework assignments will be extensions of projects established in class. Students enrolled in CA 262 will be given short projects and homework assignments every few weeks or so. Students enrolled in CA 362 will be given a single term length assignment that they are to undertake for the duration of this semester. Because of the extended nature of this project, students in CA 362 are exempt from the smaller projects given to students in CA 262 but everyone is still required to attend all the studio sessions and critiques.

REQUIREMENTS:

The classes are mainly structured to studio work with specific instruction and lectures usually given at the start of class so punctual attendance is absolutely essential to success.

Special Notes on the Online Delivery of the class in Fall 2020

Teaching and studying studio art remotely is a new situation, we hope to focus on the positive potentials of this new, temporary, configuration. We realize there will be individual situations that present challenges or differences and we are committed to being flexible when needed, and we imagine students will take on the same ethos. The class time will be structured around in class presentations, discussions, workshops, with regular breaks for working on assigned projects in class time. One on one sessions with Faculty and Teaching Assistants as well as break out groups with class mates will also form part of the structure.

This course will also require access to the following software:

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: YOUR WORK, YOUR SUCCESS

SFU’s Academic Integrity web site http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating.  Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the University community.  Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the University. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the University. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html

TEACHING AT SFU IN FALL 2020

Teaching at SFU in fall 2020 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.

Students with hidden or visible disabilities who believe they may need class or exam accommodations, including in the current context of remote learning, are encouraged to register with the SFU Centre for Accessible Learning (caladmin@sfu.ca or 778-782-3112).
