Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

A critical analysis of certain 'hot' issues in criminology and criminal justice. The topics covered change from term to term.

COURSE DETAILS:

Can personal privacy exist in a digital age where the dominant economic model involves the surveillance of every move you make and every breath you take? Must we choose between privacy and security? Are we witnessing the end of democracy? In what other ways is privacy is being challenged in this contemporary digital age where we carry our lives in our phones and laptops? How did we get here?

The course will address these and other questions by first examining early conceptions of privacy as defined by the Canadian and US Supreme Courts. This will be followed by an examination of the development of the internet, how it is regulated, and some of the many privacy and surveillance issues that have arisen in our interconnected globe. We’ll conclude by asking how we might proceed with the regulation of the internet in a manner that allows us to enjoy what it offers in a manner that is safe and non-exploitative.

Note that this seminar is intended to be highly interactive, which will require you to attend online in the designated course hours. The bulk of work during class time will involve discussion of readings and collaborative design and analysis of an online survey dealing with issues we discuss in the course. Some video material will be shared during class time; others can be viewed independently in preparation for discussion in class. Course assignments all will be submitted online; there are no formal exams in this course.

Grading

  • Book or film review connecting the reviewed material to course readings, themes. 20%
  • Analysis of terms of service from an online application. 20%
  • Course participation through brief reports on readings and videos and the design and distribution of an online survey 20%
  • Completion of a research report based on some aspect of the survey data that is gathered 40%

Materials

REQUIRED READING:

No required text. All readings will be available online through a course web page. However, students will be asked to obtain a book or film at their expense for one of the course assignments from a list the professor will supply.

TEACHING AT SFU IN FALL 2020

Teaching at SFU in fall 2020 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
