CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Permits students completing the visual art major to work in an open and critical studio situation. Students continue to develop a body of work begun in CA (or FPA) 460 for their graduating exhibition at the end of the term. Preparation and installation of the exhibition is part of the course requirement. A course materials fee is required. Students with credit for FPA 461 may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

Over the course of this semester you will be working towards your graduation exhibition, and the structure and content of this class will reflect that:

The main focus will be on maintaining and developing your practice and undertaking self-directed projects, producing work towards your graduating exhibition.

Alongside your individual practice you will be engaged in the collective process of realising a group exhibition, requiring you to think both practically and critically about exhibition making, and situating your practice beyond the studio.

Both in the context of your individual practice and the exhibition you will contribute to and engage with individual and group discussions, and with the site of the studio as a community of practice.

You will write an Artist’s Statement, as well as engaging with and contributing to the collective process of organising and framing an exhibition, including any collateral material and events (poster, brochure, events, talks etc.)

All of these activities will be supported by individual and group discussions with Hannah and your peers related to your practice as well as a series of ‘Propositions’ – presentations/discussions led by Hannah considering the exhibition as a medium, explored through sound, writing, performance, via Nina Simone, Gal Costa, Trisha Donnelly, Alvin Lucier, and Robert Ashley, among others. Hannah will also lead a workshop on writing Artists’ Statements, making a series of propositions for how this form can be thought through experimentally.

We will start our session each Tuesday (with a few exceptions) with a brief Studio Meeting: an opportunity to check in, share pertinent information, inform each other of relevant upcoming events. As the semester evolves, the focus of these meetings will turn towards the organisation of your exhibition.

Registrar Notes:

SFU’s Academic Integrity web site http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating.  Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the University community.  Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the University. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the University. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
