Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Focuses on teaching secondary school mathematics. Students explore mathematical learning, their own mathematical thinking and curriculum; and plan mathematical instruction within a consistent framework using appropriate instructional materials and methods. Quantitative.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course will be delivered remotely.  Students are expected to be online and available during scheduled class time.



This course is designed for prospective and practicing secondary school teachers who wish to explore the fundamentals of teaching and learning as it applies to mathematics. Each class will have both a pedagogical and a mathematical focus.

Through engagement in selected readings, classroom discussion, and collaborative inquiry, students will be given the opportunity to explore their own beliefs and values about teaching mathematics.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

Students will:

  • build systemic knowledge about teaching mathematics
  • develop significant background knowledge about what students have experienced or should have experienced in previous grades
  • shift pedagogical viewpoints from traditional teaching strategies: changing scripts leave this course with a toolkit of strategies for reflective and responsive practice.

  • Assignments (10 x 10%) 100%

NOTES:

There is no final exam for this course.

The assignments outlined are subject to change.

REQUIREMENTS:

Students will be expected to attend all classes, and to participate fully in class work and discussions. In this course students will receive several assignments including paper response tasks, script writing tasks, problem solving tasks.

REQUIRED READING:

There is no dedicated textbook for this course. Required Readings will include a combination of journal articles and book chapters that have been selected to support the aims of this course. These readings can be downloaded each week from Canvas.
