Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Students will study in depth various qualitative methodological approaches to educational research, will develop competence to contribute significantly to knowledge in their particular field of study, and will engage in intensive practice of various methodological approaches to qualitative research introduced in EDUC 866.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course is designed for graduate students in education who are preparing to conduct a qualitative research study or who are already in the midst of a qualitative research project.  The final paper can be adapted to fit each student's research trajectory, and one essential goal of the course is to provide a forum for students to make progress on their own research studies.

Graduate students who have not completed 866, but have completed equivalent coursework can contact the instructor for permission to enrol. 

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

  • Develop a more advanced understanding of various stages of an interpretative research project;
  • Engage in specific inquiry practices and strategies that are associated with qualitative research;
  • Explore various approaches to analyzing qualitative data, and apply one or more analytical approaches to existing data;
  • Gain increased familiarity with the particular tradition/paradigm/approach that applies to your research project

NOTES:

More detailed information regarding the assignments will be provided on the first day of classes. Please also note that the students may need to conduct fieldwork off campus, at a location chosen by the student. Information about this fieldwork, as well as risk and safety issues, will be reviewed in class prior to undertaking the activity.
