CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Participants will discuss methodological approaches in sociolinguistic research in educational and other social contexts. Course instructors will introduce a range of sociolinguistic research following different methodologies, as well as presenting their own research. Participants will be involved in discussions and analysis in three areas: analysis of data from instructors' research; applicability of methodologies in participants' own social and educational contexts; relevance and applicability of methodologies in terms of participants' emerging research plans.

COURSE DETAILS:

À partir de lectures qui reviendront sur la constitution du champ sociolinguistique et qui
mobiliseront la diversité des thématiques abordées et les méthodes de collecte de données,
il s’agira d’une part de mieux comprendre les apports d’une démarche de recherche
sociolinguistique en éducation; et d’autre part, d’examiner un large éventail de recherches
en sociolinguistique et en sociodidactique afin de se familiariser avec les enjeux éthiques,
scientifiques et sociaux des recherches de terrain. Le cours mettra en pratique certains des
outils de recherche puisqu’il sera demandé aux étudiants de réaliser une étude de terrain,
ainsi que de participer aux discussions portant sur : l’analyse de données à partir de travaux
de recherche existants (incluant ceux de l’instructeur), la décision quant à la méthodologie
la plus pertinente par rapport au cadre éducationnel et social de l’étudiant, et la pertinence
et l’applicabilité des méthodes retenues dans le cadre du projet de recherche du participant.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

Au terme du semestre, les étudiants seront en mesure de :
- se référer avec aisance aux différents concepts et théories qui encadrent la
sociolinguistique;
- définir un objet de recherche (et en particulier en sociolinguistique);
- construire la cohérence entre les axes théorique et méthodologique d’une recherche
(en sociolinguistique).
- se situer en tant que chercheur face à un terrain de recherche.

Grading

  • Présentation critique d’articles 20%
  • Recension d’une thématique abordée en sociolinguistique 20%
  • Présentation et analyse d’un paysage linguistique urbain 25%
  • Proposition de recherche 45%

NOTES:

Ce cours implique des activités obligatoires sur le terrain en dehors du contexte de classe
régulier. Les risques associés à ces activités sont très faibles et une séance d’information
aura lieu en classe avant chacune de ces activités pour en préciser la teneur.
