Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

A professional seminar that provides students with a grounding in pedagogy and introduces professional aspects of English studies. Course will be graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.

COURSE DETAILS:

This professional development seminar will be devoted to exploring recent critical approaches to Indigenous literatures through a reading of reviews and articles over the past twenty years on Tomson Highway’s landmark novel, Kiss of the Fur Queen (1998). We will consider a variety of critical approaches, including postcolonial, historical materialist, queer, Indigenous nationalist, and nation-specific. The course will address key questions and issues in Indigenous literary studies, including land, language, positionality, Indigenous urban experience, residential schools, expressions of gender and sexuality, class, and resurgence. This is a pass-fail course with no grades, but it involves reading, writing, and responsible class participation in order to pass. Please note: there is one required text (Tomson Highway's novel, Kiss of the Fur Queen) and one recommended text (Reder and Morra's Learn, Teach, Challenge). The latter, an anthology of critical writings in Indigenous literary studies, will be useful for you for all the Indigenous literature courses in the MATE program. We will also read a selection of essays (to be posted on Canvas).

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

- To familiarize yourself with current critical debates in Indigenous literary studies.
- To read and discuss a key text of Indigenous literatures.
- To learn about important social, historical, and political contexts that surround the study of Indigenous literatures.
- To reacquaint yourself with scholarly writing and oral presentation.
- To familiarize yourself with the scholarly expectations of the MATE program.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: YOUR WORK, YOUR SUCCESS

SFU’s Academic Integrity web site http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating.  Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the University community.  Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the University. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the University. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
