Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Students having a basic familiarity with elements of production and design participate in an in-depth theoretical and practical exploration of stage and production management for theatre, dance and music production. Students in this class will develop skills necessary to provide technical support for the School's productions. Assignments will be conducted in class and through practicum work on productions. Maybe of particular interest to students in other departments. Quantitative.

COURSE DETAILS:

CA271 builds upon the foundations of planning and managing events, performance and installation taught in CA171, and will focus in more detail on the specific roles of the Production and Stage Manager.

Students will submit several assignments and are expected to participate thoroughly in class time. Readings and information-materials are provided for pre-class and post-class study. Course assignments focus on building skills in planning, scheduling, and creating the supporting paperwork required of the stage manager.
This class meets weekly and students will have opportunities for practicums through positions on the fall capstone projects.

  • Practical experience planning and running live performances across multiple disciplines

Materials

MATERIALS + SUPPLIES:

• The course will be run through SFU’s remote learning management software- Canvas. A stable internet connection will be required to access the materials.
• A personal computer.
• Computer capable of word processing and creating formula based spreadsheets.
• Office 365 which is available to SFU students for free (or equivalent).
• Drafting work will require drawing tools such as pencils (2H or mechanical), ruler, and eraser. Optional: architect’s ruler.
• Students will need to obtain a free student licence of Vectorworks 2019 (or later).
• Office hours will be held over Zoom.

TEACHING AT SFU IN FALL 2021

Teaching at SFU in fall 2021 will involve primarily in-person instruction, with approximately 70 to 80 per cent of classes in person/on campus, with safety plans in place.  Whether your course will be in-person or through remote methods will be clearly identified in the schedule of classes.  You will also know at enrollment whether remote course components will be “live” (synchronous) or at your own pace (asynchronous).
