  • Prerequisites:

    Acceptance into the dance major or extended minor and prior approval. Corequisite: Students must be concurrently enrolled in a technique course at an appropriate level. These courses include 220, 320, 322, 420, and 421.

Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

One of two courses which provide advanced level dance students with the opportunity to work as an ensemble rehearsing and preparing for a series of public performances. Choreography will be created and/or selected by a faculty director. This course can be repeated for credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

The title of the Fall Repertory Dance Show will be PPE_WAVES, (a take on the term Personal Protective Equipment re-titled as Post Pandemic Euphoria). This will be a single evening length event.

Our guest choreographer will be AMBER FUNK BARTON, Artistic Director of The Response. Professor Henry Daniel will be the second choreographer and the evening will also feature material from invited choreographers in the recent Student Choreographer Series. Performance will likely be a combination of live face-to-face in the Theatre an online as well as pre-made video recordings.

Please be advised, that this course will require intensive work during class time and on your own outside of class time. Attendance is mandatory and unarranged or extended absences may result in a student being asked to understudy or even withdraw from the work. In the event of unanticipated disturbances to the regular schedule because of the COVID-19 situation, additional rehearsals, showings and technical requirements/rehearsals, costume fittings, etc. may be scheduled outside of the regular class time.  (Every effort will be made to inform you of these unscheduled events ahead of time).

GRADING

This course requires intense personal involvement in the creation of content material as well as additional individual research in preparation for studio work. Students are expected to be on time for every class, prepared to work and train in a professional manner displaying discipline and respect for their peers. Grades will also be based on the student’s development and progression throughout the course. Punctuality, regular attendance, consistency in focus, integration of feedback, willingness to take risks and embrace change are essential elements of the course.

Creative/Artistic proficiency - 40%   
Ability to engage creatively and artistically with theme of the production. Participation and commitment in all aspects of the creation process. Ability to retain choreography, take corrections and apply corrections. Demonstrated understanding of the choreographic intention. As appropriate, creative contributions to the creative process.

Overall Development - 30%
Improvement, maturity development throughout the course.

Work Habits/Performance - 30%
Regular attendance, punctuality, consistency infocus and attention, integration of feedback and a willingness to embrace new ideas in performance. Technical mastery of the material. Artistic attributes/ Interpretation.

Notes: Active participation in all aspects of class work is essential.  Students are strongly advised to keep a personal notebook or journal for this course. These notes will be extremely useful in the creative process as well as in meetings with the instructor. If you are unable to physically participate due to illness or injury there are ways in which you can contribute to the interdisciplinary nature of the production. If you are unable to attend class, please notify me by email ahead of class time. Please also note that more than 3 absences will result in the drop of one grade increment, i.e., from an A to an A- or a B to a B-.

COVID 19 Precautions

  1. You will need to have access to a computer and a camera for possible filming of assignments.
  2. Due to Covid protocols you should expect to wear your own garments for costumes and take care of your own garments/costumes.
  3. It is strongly recommended that technique classes and/or other physical training be a part of your Summer break plans.

TIMES & DATES:

Rehearsals will take place on Mon., Wed., 2.30-6.20pm and Fridays between 2.30-6.20 through to the week of performances. There will be a total of 5 Shows (four evenings and 1 matinee) between Wednesday 17-20th  starting in Week 11 Nov. 15th of the semester. The base location of these performances will be the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre.

TEACHING AT SFU IN FALL 2021

Teaching at SFU in fall 2021 will involve primarily in-person instruction, with approximately 70 to 80 per cent of classes in person/on campus, with safety plans in place.  Whether your course will be in-person or through remote methods will be clearly identified in the schedule of classes.  You will also know at enrollment whether remote course components will be “live” (synchronous) or at your own pace (asynchronous).

Enrolling in a course acknowledges that you are able to attend in whatever format is required.  You should not enroll in a course that is in-person if you are not able to return to campus, and should be aware that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes.
