Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

A survey of some major sociological perspectives on crime and deviance that will include both mainstream and critical theories. These will include: anomie, neutralization, control, group conflict, sub-cultural, ecological, functionalist and critical theories. Critical analysis of the assumptions upon which each theory is based. Examination of the similarities and differences between/among the various explanations. Breadth-Social Sciences.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course provides a sociological perspective on crime and criminal justice by treating social structure and social inequality as central themes in the study of crime–and major factors in society's treatment of criminals. It pays explicit attention to key sociological concepts such as poverty, gender, race, and ethnicity, and demonstrates their influence on crime. In addition, this course addresses two central themes in the sociological understanding of crime and criminal justice: (1) the degree to which race and ethnicity, gender, and social class affect the operation of the criminal justice system; and (2) the extent to which reliance on the criminal justice system can reduce the amount of crime.

COVID-19 UPDATE:
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, instruction (which is normally offered “face to face” on campus) will be presented “remotely” via interactive Zoom lectures/tutorials/office hours, Canvas and email. Please ensure you have a stable Internet connection and a functional webcam, since there will be times in lecture, tutorial and office hours when we will be speaking with each other using our webcams. Most of this course content in the Spring 2021 semester will be offered synchronously (about 90%). This option allows students to speak up and have me answer questions live. I will be posting lecture slides after each class to Canvas. Tutorials will also be conducted live during the allocated time. Some components of selected lectures will be asynchronous (about 10%), e.g., watching the assigned videos and discussing them in the tutorials.

NOTE:
Tutorials for this course consist of ten on-line tutorials, accessible through Canvas. FURTHER INFORMATION WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE FIRST LECTURE

TEACHING AT SFU IN SPRING 2021

Teaching at SFU in spring 2021 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
