CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to the techniques of artistic composition as experienced in a collaborative interdisciplinary studio environment. The emphasis is on the creation, analysis and critique of new compositions created in collaborative groups by students in dance, music, theatre, film/video and visual art. Students with credit for FPA 285 may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

CA285 is an introductory class in which we explore the approaches and techniques of making work in collaboration across disciplines to make short-form artistic compositions. The class will strive to make work that reflects the mix of students in the class, integrating elements of movement, music, theater, video, and visual art/installation. Students will be working in various pairings of collaborative groups throughout the term, across several project prompts. Students are expected to deeply engage in group discussions, find collaborative processes, play, present their work, and give and receive feedback throughout the term.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

  1. To develop a level of comfort, flexibility and adaptability to working and experimenting with peers on artistic projects.
  2. To demonstrate a basic understanding of compositional frameworks that can be applied in the making of interdisciplinary works.
  3. To develop observational and verbal skills in describing their own processes and completed projects, as well as giving feedback on the work of others.
  4. To nurture awareness and language around what their personal inquiry and practice is/may become.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: YOUR WORK, YOUR SUCCESS

SFU’s Academic Integrity website http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating. Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the university community. Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the university. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the university. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
