 COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course begins with an exploration of educational change theory and practice in order to identify key themes, beliefs, and values. Course readings will serve to both highlight and problematize key principles and practices informing educational program implementation from the perspectives of educators and school leaders. We will actively work to simultaneously understand but also challenge the dominant educational change story to incorporate Indigenous perspectives on change and leadership. Using the BC K-12 curriculum implementation as a case study, students will identify strengths and weaknesses, internal tensions and possibilities related to recent and ongoing programmatic and ideological changes in BC schools.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

Students are expected to:

  • critically explore their personal experiences with change;
  • demonstrate a nuanced understanding of the complex nature of educational implementation in theory and in practice;
  • identify barriers and opportunities for educational change at different organizational levels;
  • apply an Indigenous perspective to the theoretical and practical dimensions of educational change;
  • critically and creatively address challenges currently faced in BC schools in relation to BC Curriculum by applying different change concepts, models, theories

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: YOUR WORK, YOUR SUCCESS

SFU’s Academic Integrity website http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating. Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the university community. Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the university. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the university. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
