Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Explores recent debates and future directions of feminist thought and introduces students to different models of feminist writing. The writing-intensive component of the course trains students to develop analytical, writing, and research skills through a variety of writing activities and assignments. Equivalent Courses: WS398 Writing.

COURSE DETAILS:

This writing-intensive (W) course examines recent debates in feminist thought and introduces students to different models of feminist writing. This course is particularly concerned with how we can use technology and popular media to communicate ideas about feminism to a nonacademic audience. Indeed, while academic literature and research is integral to feminist thinking, different writing forms have always been integral to feminist writing, thinking, and activism. To this end, students will be encouraged to explore writing that straddles the political and the personal using different formats, and will work on conveying scholarly feminist ideas for a general audience. We will also explore how academic writing conventions hinder alternative forms of creative and critical expression, as well as reproducing power dynamics that marginalize racialized scholars, for instance. Class time will consist of lectures, class discussion, and in-class workshops and activities where students will explore writing issues and get feedback from both their peers and the instructor.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: YOUR WORK, YOUR SUCCESS

SFU’s Academic Integrity website http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating. Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the university community. Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the university. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the university. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html

Students with a faith background who may need accommodations during the semester are encouraged to assess their needs as soon as possible and review the Multifaith religious accommodations website.
