Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Principles and concepts of transmission of genetic information. Topics include: molecular basis of inheritance, interpretation of pedigrees, chromosomal mapping, linkage, crosses, epigenetics, and the regulation and flow of genetic information from DNA to proteins. Focus on problem-solving.

Grading

  • • Lecture Participation 10%
  • • Weekly Practice Assignment 5%

NOTES:

**Alternative Exam weighting: 

Option 1 = 35% midterm + 45% cumulative final exam.

Option 2 = 25% midterm + 55% cumulative final exam.

For each individual student: The instructor will calculate both options, and automatically use the best option to assign your final letter grade. 

Mode of teaching
Lecture: In-person, though lectures will be recorded.  Lecture Participation can be done in-person, or asynchronously at home before a weekly deadline.   Weekly assignments are completed at home.

Tutorials: In-person (with no remote/asynchronous options, as in-person problem-solving with your classmates and TA greatly enhances your learning, and tutorial participation marks will be awarded for taking part).

Mid-term exam: in person; Monday, March 4th, 6:30-8:20pm.

Final exam: in person; date: TBA

Materials

MATERIALS + SUPPLIES:

To participate during lectures, you should have an i>clicker remote (any version, new or used) or a subscription to the iClicker student app.  An internet-enabled device that can open a CANVAS quiz during class is an acceptable alternative. (Note: If you bought a used iclicker remote, email Kevin with the remote ID and he will manually register you into BISC 202 for free, to skip the used-iclicker registration fee)

Klug, William S., Concepts of Genetics (11th or 12th editions are recommended, but older editions are acceptable)

OR

Griffiths, Anthony J. F. An Introduction to Genetic Analysis. (11th edition is recommended, but older editions are acceptable)
