COURSE DETAILS:
African American History before 1865
This course traces the history of the African American experience from the transatlantic slave trade to the Civil War. We will thoroughly examine the institution of slavery and its impact on the U.S. race relations, economy, and society, as well as resistance, cultural explorations in response to changing conditions, and the formation of black communities. We will consider how African American history intersects with, shapes, and is shaped by other historical moments and movements in the U.S. and beyond. This course will require frequent reading and writing.
