Description
CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
The continuation of CA 145. Students will be required to attend a weekly area-wide seminar where the practice of composition will be discussed.
COURSE DETAILS:
Creative Sound Studio II is a project-based, hands-on sound/music-making workshop. It will include:
- Making music for diverse contexts: composer as solo performer, composer as part of an ensemble, composer as producer/artistic director.
- Introduce creative sound practices incorporating hands-on experience with digital audio workstations (DAW), basic amplification (the mixer as a paradigm for sound manipulation).
- Composing for performance contexts featuring objects and DIY instruments.
- Creative resourcefulness (musicians have a long tradition of this!).
- Orchestration and performance deployment
- Approaches to music annotation/scoring/scripting.
- Listening: exposure to new work and artists via in-depth analysis and discussion.

- Projects 60%
- Listening Journals 20%
- Class participation 10%
- Questions for presenters 10%
NOTES:
GRADING OF CREATIVE PROJECTS
- Growth over the term.
- Originality and creativity.
- Dimensionality (attention to multiple facets of a work that could include time, form, concept, colour, orchestration, density, pacing, pitch, rhythm or other aspects unique to the work).
- Attention to detail (creative and practical).
- Scoring where applicable (Functionality of score and parts to achieve desired outcomes).
CLASS PARTICIPATION
- Bring prepared to share new material every week.
- Engage actively with others' work and processes in weekly discussions and presentations.
