Description
CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
The first of two courses dedicated to the development of a new work of performance led by a faculty member or visiting artist. Introduces themes and concepts, develops process and materials for a presentation in the subsequent term. Integrates the techniques acquired in context and studio courses. May repeat once for credit.
COURSE DETAILS:
On Cringe
CA 350 Performance as Research I is open to all students, across all areas, interested in developing an evening length performance from scratch. Under the direction of Ryan Tacata, students will spend the semester exploring and developing new performance vocabulary based on “Cringe Aesthetics.” What could the contemporary category of ‘cringe’ hold’? What’ are the potential functions of ‘cringe’ or ‘cringing’ as a vicarious emotional response and to what extant can we manufacture it?
COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
+ Develop and produce creative research on themes and practices of cringe and cringing.
+ Conduct creative R&D for the fall, faculty-led performance directed by Ryan Tacata (CA 450).

- Attendance & General Participation 20%
- Weekly Outside Research Assignments 40%
- Weekly & Final Performance Presentations 40%
