Description
CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
A practical application of the background knowledge and specific techniques of ARCH 433 and 434. It takes place in a research oriented field excavation. Evaluation of student performance is based upon assessments of efficiency and accuracy of excavation techniques/recording procedures, and upon the student's overall contribution to the smooth functioning of the team. Students may repeat this course for credit when the field project is different. Variable units: 3, 4, 5, 6.

In 2025, sudents in the Curaçao Environmental Archaeology Field School receive practical training in the methods of environmental archaeology, working at Indigenous and colonial sites around Jan Thiel Lagoon and Rif Sint Marie, Curaçao, where historic plantations and an important bird conservation area are today found. Field instruction is complemented by practical lab experience, lectures, and field trips. This is a research driven project designed to provide students with experiential learning and the opportunitity to contribute actively to paleoecological knowledge.
