Description
CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
Focuses on teaching elementary school mathematics. Students explore mathematical learning, their own mathematical thinking, and curriculum; and plan mathematical instruction within a consistent framework using appropriate instructional materials and methods. Quantitative.
COURSE DETAILS:
This course is designed for prospective and practicing elementary school teachers who wish to explore the fundamentals of teaching and learning as it applies to mathematics. Each class will have both a pedagogical and a mathematical focus. Through engagement in selected readings, classroom discussion, and collaborative activities, students will be given the opportunity to explore their own beliefs and values about teaching mathematics.
COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
On completion of the course it is hoped that participants will feel more at ease with the subject of mathematics, be able to deal confidently with the prescribed curriculum, and gain a practical sense of how it unfolds in the classroom.

NOTES:
The details of the assessment process will be shared in the first class and may evolve as the class progresses. Students will be assessed using standards-based assessment based upon a set of learning goals, each of which will be evaluated on a proficiency scale which will be shared. This data will be converted to a letter grade for reporting purposes. Evidence of performance will be gathered via course assignments and observations in class.
Students will be expected to attend all classes, participate fully in class work and discussions, and complete all readings and assignments.
There is no midterm or final exam for this course.
