Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An examination of aspects of the work of one or more of the nineteenth or early twentieth century sociological theorists.

COURSE DETAILS:

Durkheim, Marx, and Weber are central figures among the most significant contributors to early Sociology. They addressed fundamental questions relating to power, social change, human nature, inequality, and social cohesion. The power of their ideas reverberates throughout contemporary sociology and popular culture. Many of the debates and conflicts these thinkers responded to, and in some cases provoked, remain central to explorations of society. In this course we will examine the works of Durkheim, Marx, and Weber in relation to their historical context and relevance to Sociology and society today. We will conclude the course by reading The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois as a way of sparking a deeper discussion of the emergence of dominant modes of modern theorizing in terms of whiteness, colonialism, wealth, and hetero-patriarchal masculinity.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

Students will develop the ability to read and analyze social theory and to communicate complex ideas verbally and in writing.

  • In-class midterm examination (open book) 40%
  • Final test (non-cumulative) 20%

BE FLEXIBLE AND PATIENT. Everyone is doing their best. I will keep this in mind and ask you to do the same.

PLAN AHEAD.  Assigned material is to be completed prior to the class meeting indicated on the syllabus.

AVOID SCENTED BODY PRODUCTS. I am highly allergic, and others may be as well.

This does not mean that we need to be formal but rather that we need to be on our best behavior as members of a professional community: be constructive; avoid harsh criticism; take care to communicate in a thoughtful and curious, rather than a harsh way; avoid taking up too much ‘airtime,’ take care not to make racist, sexist, homo- or trans-negative remarks because these remarks actually harm members of the class community and beyond. Also – encourage the participation of others in group and class discussions by responding with interest and inviting others to contribute to the discussion. This does not mean that we cannot disagree with each other’s arguments or raise questions about each other’s assumptions.



Grading
: Where a final exam is scheduled and the student does not write the exam or withdraw from the course before the deadline date, an N grade will be assigned. Unless otherwise specified on the course syllabus, all graded assignments for this course must be completed for a final grade other than N to be assigned. An N is considered as an F for the purposes of scholastic standing.

Grading System: The Undergraduate Course Grading System is as follows:

*N standing to indicate the student did not complete course requirements
