CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to the theories and practices of remote sensing, including sensors and platforms, image collection, preliminary image analysis and interpretation, and a review of remote sensing applications in environmental monitoring and resource management. Quantitative.
COURSE DETAILS:
GEOG 253 is the introductory course in the remote sensing stream offered by the Department of Geography, followed by GEOG 353 (Advanced Remote Sensing) and GEOG 453 (Theoretical and Applied Remote Sensing). This course emphasizes the principles of remote sensing and the use of remotely sensed data for monitoring land resources and environmental features. Topics include surface–energy interactions, sensing systems, different types of remote sensing (e.g., optical, thermal, LiDAR, and radar), image interpretation, and the application of remote sensing to vegetation, water, soil, and urban environments. GEOG 253 provides the foundation for GEOG 353, which emphasizes digital image analysis, and GEOG 453, which centers on independent research projects. The course combines lectures on foundational concepts with practical lab sessions, where students interpret and analyze remote sensing imagery. Upon completion, students will have a solid foundation in remote sensing and its applications across diverse environments.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the fundamental principles of electromagnetic radiation and remote sensing processes
- Define and correctly apply key concepts in remote sensing
- Understand the functions and characteristics of different remote sensing systems
- Evaluate applications of remote sensing to real-world environmental issues
- Use image processing software to perform basic analyses of remote sensing images
