Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

How do environmental challenges, the contradictions of capitalism, and histories of violence shape contemporary life? How do social issues affect our identities, communities, and sense of belonging? Students learn how to wield sociological concepts and theories through clear and analytical communication and writing.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course is dedicated to examining how social policy shapes peoples’ lives. We begin with an examination of sociological theories of social policy and its political, social, and cultural functions. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to critically examine policies, programs, and methods involved in the governance of populations, the solving of “problems”, and the re-fashioning of government and the state. The course is dedicated to exploring the methodological and epistemological grounds on which (social) policies are justified and built, with a substantive focus on taxation, stratification, bureaucracy, citizenship, technocracy, welfare, and quantification.  In addition, the course includes a focus on the intersection between policies and knowledge production, and issues of gender, race, Indigeneity, and citizenship. The course blends practical policy analysis skills and theoretically informed approaches to social policy, with a focus on knowledge translation, specifically of social analysis into public-facing work.

NOTES:

Grading: Where a final exam is scheduled and the student does not write the exam or withdraw from the course before the deadline date, an N grade will be assigned. Unless otherwise specified on the course syllabus, all graded assignments for this course must be completed for a final grade other than N to be assigned. An N is considered as an F for the purposes of scholastic standing.

Grading System: The Undergraduate Course Grading System is as follows:

A+ (95-100) | A (90-94) | A- (85-89) | B+ (80-84) | B (75-79) | B- (70-74) | C+ (65-69) | C (60-64) | C- (55-59) | D (50-54) | F (0-49) | N*
*N standing to indicate the student did not complete course requirements
