Beedie biz-whizzes shine in local, international competitions
As usual, Beedie business students punched well above their weight in 2011 in numerous business case competitions at home, in the U.S. and overseas. In March, a team of undergraduate and graduate business students took top honours at the BC Investment Research Challenge regional competition in early March. Then in May, a team of Beedie undergraduates won bronze in at the International Case Competition in Maastricht, Netherlands. Watch the final-round presentation at http://iccmaastricht.virb.com/. And in September a Beedie team used Vancouver’s 2011 Stanley Cup Riot as a case study to examine social media’s growing role in society and business, winning two awards at the high-profile Intercollegiate Business Ethics Case Competition in Bellevue WA.

SFU pioneers first Aboriginal executive MBA
The Beedie School of Business established Canada’s first Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) in Aboriginal Business and Leadership, with classes beginning in fall 2012. The new EMBA will meet a growing need for senior-level management education for Aboriginal managers and entrepreneurs, as well as individuals and organizations.

BC Export Award for Beedie Grad
Larisa Topalo, who received a Bachelor of Business Administration with an extended minor in economics at October convocation, won the 2011 BC Export Award for International Business Studies. The $3,000 award recognizes a post-secondary student who has shown leadership and excelled in international studies while contributing to the BC export community

Beedie tops survey charts for management research
Two international surveys this year placed the Beedie School of Business among the world’s top 100 post-secondary institutions for business and management research.

Beedie School of Business has Klout on Twitter
The Beedie School (@sfubeedie) laid claim to the highest-rated Klout score among Canadian business schools, with a Klout score of 52 — positioning it as a leader for social media influence and impact. Klout, considered by many as the gold-standard Twitter ranking system, measures influence based on Twitter follower counts, re-tweets, list memberships, unique mentions and more.

Honours for Beedie School mentor
The Beedie School’s Sam Thiara was named Mentor of the Year for his inspirational engagement and leadership in the Vancouver Board of Trade’s Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) program. Thiara is manager of student engagement and recruitment and has worked with LOT since its establishment in 1999.
