Prof wins top education award

Lecture series explores why ‘Arts Matter’
The education faculty partnered with the Langley Fine Arts School (LFAS) and Research for Youth Music and Education (RYME) in 2011 to present Arts Matter, a public lecture series celebrating the arts and promoting arts education. Series co-organizer and SFU education associate professor Susan O’Neill said the series was designed to explore “ways of increasing opportunities for young people to engage in artistic learning and creative expression in both their schools and communities.”

Andrews wins staff achievement award for leadership
Ian Andrews was selected in 2011 as SFU’s Staff Achievement Award winner for leadership in recognition of his 16 years leading the internationalization of the Faculty of Education. Andrews is the faculty’s director of international education, and his work has established the faculty as a leader in the field, collaborating with universities and governments around the world to offer international programs.

Balancing priorities key to registrar’s EdD
By day, Kate Ross is SFU’s registrar and executive director of student enrollment. By night, she’s a wife and mother to two children in their 20s. And for most of the last five years during virtually all of her free time Ross has also been an EdD student in the Faculty of Education. In 2011, she achieved her goal in spades, receiving a Dean of Graduate Studies Convocation Medal for completing her doctorate with a cumulative GPA of 4.13, placing her in the top five per cent of her graduating class.

Nintendogs promote animal empathy: study
Can a children’s videogame in which they buy and care for virtual pet dogs encourage kids to have more compassion for animals and their humane treatment? Yes, according to SFU education professor David Kaufman, who spent three weeks studying Grade 4 and 5 kids playing Nintendo's Nintendogs on the video-game company’s DS2 portable gaming console.

Kieran Egan Receives Outstanding Book Award
Education professor Kieran Egan, has been recognized with a 2011 Outstanding Book Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teachers Education (AACTE) for his book, The Future of Education: Re-imagining Our Schools from the Ground Up.
