New chair aims to reduce violent behaviour in youth
A new $4.5-million B.C. Leadership Chair at SFU, the first of its kind in BC, was created in 2011 to develop new strategies to reduce and prevent violent and aggressive behaviour in children and youth. Robert McMahon, an internationally renowned clinical child psychologist, was appointed as the BC Leadership Chair in Proactive Approaches to Reducing Risk for Violence Among Children and Youth.

SFU orangutan champion stars in IMAX® film
Archaeology professor Biruté Galdikas, whose research and rescue of the world’s endangered orangutans spans 40 years, played a starring role in a major IMAX® film in 2011 documenting her work. Born to Be Wild, which opened worldwide in April , traces her life’s work with orphaned orangutans at a sanctuary she established in the remote jungle of Borneo.

Richard Frank

Web crawler targets child exploitation
Criminology PhD student Richard Frank developed a web crawler in 2011 that enables researchers to track websites that exploit children and collect samples, all while keeping the researchers safe from viewing the content.

SFU economist Arthur Robson

Economist Robson named Guggenheim fellow
SFU economist Arthur Robson, a Canada Research Chair in economic theory and evolution, was awarded a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2011 for a 12-month period starting in January 2012. The prestigious fellowship is awarded “to men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.”

Shadbolt fellow wins poetry prize
English associate professor Stephen Collis won 2011 B.C. Book Prizes’ Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize for his latest publication, On the Material (Talon Books, 2010).

Collins also won SFU’s 2011/2012 Shadbolt fellowship, which he’ll use over the coming year to a finance new book entitled A History of Change.
