Archaeology joins Faculty of Environment
The study of archaeology is traditionally associated with sociology, anthropology and history, so it may seem odd that on April 1, the department of archaeology left the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) to join the Faculty of Environment (FENV). Environment dean John Pierce says it’s a move that makes sense.

New network studies BC central coast ecosystems
A major new ecological initiative called the Hakai Network for Coastal People, Ecosystems and Management aims to apply ecosystem-based management to the BC central coast’s many forest and fishery resources.
Funded with a multi-million-dollar, eight-year agreement from the Tula Foundation, the Hakai Network is housed at the Burnaby campus under director Ken Lerzman, professor of resource and environmental management (REM).

Saving Beaver Lake
Environmental experts say that within the next 10 to 20 years, Beaver Lake in Stanley Park will disappear. That’s why environmental science student Calvin Stuckert and Delphine Faugeroux, an international exchange student from AgroParisTech in France, spent four months studying sediment samples from the lake. They’re involved in a joint project with BCIT students to help the Stanley Park Ecological Society and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation (VBPR) determine how best to restore the lake.

Dan Burns gets back to his roots
Dan Burns calls himself a cross-pollinator. The Faculty of Environment’s new manager of curriculum and academic planning is charged with developing interdisciplinary environmental programs. To do that, he has begun to establish an informal, campus-wide academic network of faculty members whose environmental expertise meshes well regardless of their disciplines.

SFU scientist tracks Amelia Earhart’s DNA
The fate of famed aviator Amelia Earhart remains a mystery after DNA tests on one of three bone fragments discovered on a Pacific island proved inconclusive. Researchers in the Faculty of Environment’s forensic lab had hoped they could produce the first DNA profile of aviation’s most celebrated woman—and provide new clues about her disappearance 74 years ago.

PICS enlists SFU in climate change research
SFU researchers in the Faculty of Environment and other faculties are involved in 10 of 27 new British Columbia-led climate change research projects funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS). The funding for the projects involving SFU amounts to $682,950 of the $1.8 million in new PICS funding aimed at finding solutions to the environmental, social and economic challenges and opportunities stemming from climate change.

‘Dig Greece!’
A lucky group of approximately 20 students spent almost three months on the spectacular Greek island of Kefalonia as participants in SFU’s Dig Greece! archaeology-based semester abroad program. Students in all faculties can apply for the program organized by Hellenic Studies and the Faculty of Environment with the archaeology department and the Greek Archaeological Service.

New program for environmental science
Beginning in the fall semester, the Faculty of Environment embarked on a new environmental science program that offers four areas of concentration: applied biology, environmental earth systems, environmetrics, and a new concentration, water science.

New REM prof comes home
After completing degrees in business administration and resource management at SFU, John Axsen left SFU to pursue a PhD and post-doctoral work in California. But he came back in 2011, as an assistant professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM).

Carbon Neutral – too good to be true?
B.C. should abandon its goal of creating a carbon neutral public sector, according to a policy brief written by professor Mark Jaccard and research associate Brad Griffin in 2011. Jaccard and Griffin are researchers with the Energy and Materials Research Group (ERMG) in SFU’s School for Resource and Environmental Management (REM).
